The religious-reform movements in the 16th century had the following results:

 1. Fragmentation of Christian society As a result of religious reformation movements, Roman Catholic society got divided into  Lutheran Calvinist etc. and they established their own separate churches.

2. Anti-Reformation Movements Reformation movements forced the Catholic Church to rectify its faults. The result of this was that the Catholics made extensive efforts to remove the various defects existing in their religion, which were jointly called the anti-reformation movement or the Catholic religion-reformation movement.

3. Promotion of morality: The religious reformers strongly criticized the immoral life of the Pope and priests. The establishment of the Protestant Church opened the eyes of the Pope and the priests and they decided to lead a moral life. This promoted the sanctity of the Church.

4. Religious intolerance and bloodshed In the name of both the Protestants and the Catholics, terrible bloodshed took place. This form of religion created a feeling of alienation in people towards religion, as a result of which materialism developed a lot in Europe and the feeling of religious intolerance started to flourish.

Reformers like Luther demanded a ban on money being given to Italy in the name of the Church. As the national spirit developed, people’s attraction towards democracy started increasing. Now the demand for democracy instead of autocratic rule started increasing all over the world.

Development of trade and commerce According to Catholic opinion, it was against religion to accumulate more money and give it for interest, but due to the coming into existence of Calvinism, this belief started to fade away. According to Calvinism, “It is better to earn more money and lend it at interest.”

This ideology was welcomed by traders, producers and bankers and they were inspired to develop trade and commerce. As a result of this, trade and commerce began to develop rapidly.
