1st Memorial Day was celebrated on May 30, 1868 as President Ulysses Grant honored the fallen soldiers at the Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. Memorial Day was originally called as Decoration Day, which honored only those soldiers who died during the Civil War. And on this day, the family of the fallen soldier decorates their grave with flowers. And that was the reason why it was originally called Decoration Day. But after World War I, it included honoring and mourning all the soldiers who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

It is here that India also celebrates a similar memorial day in memory of its heroes, the National War Memorial is a specially built monument built by the Government of India to honor its armed forces in the vicinity of India Gate, New Delhi. The National War Memorial built on 44 acres near India Gate was dedicated to the nation on 25 February 2019.

The red poppy is a symbol of Memorial Day as Americans usually wear red poppies on their dress. And inspired by Canadian military surgeon John McCrae’s poem In Flanders’fields, American Professor Moynamichael conceived the idea of using poppies as a symbol of remembrance for those who served in World War One.
